About How to present a performance
From the end of 2012 my first performance till the end of 2016, what I experienced and did has changed my attitude of doing performance .
At the beginning, performance for me has more to do with the perceptions of the performer, how he use his perception to arrange the elements to create and present his space. Since I present my performances mostly in the frame of some performance festivals, slowly we had organised our own performance festival , slowly “live” itself has becomes the main elements of my works.
In China, the idea of performance festival is still kinda fresh, curious brings audiences. After we organised the performance festival, someone came and asked me if we are interested in organising some performance on their opening ceremony of the sales centre. Performance was the representation of purist form of art at that time for me, naturally I rejected to use this form to attaching customers.
But slowly the limitation of performers “gathering together” on a performance festival has shown. Live, improvisation, body, audience, rapidly I saw the artists using the same grammar which only suits on performance festivals, the festivals lack of strength to change the established form. Creativity turns to be rigid, more or less becomes into a short term art tour.
I feel weak to be inside this performance festival system, and have’t see the direction of an alternation…
